Case Study

Amy Belcher is 44 years of age, smokes, and has not exercised more than once per week in the past 7 months due to her busy work schedule. She has a body mass index of 27 kg/m2. Her resting blood pressure is 144/86 mmHg, total cholesterol 229 mg/dL, LDL 124 mg/dL, HDL 41 mg/dL, and fasting blood glucose 92 mg/dL. She is taking 40 mg of atorvastatin (Lipitor) daily for her high cholesterol levels. Amy does not have any signs and symptoms of cardiovascular, metabolic, or renal diseases. In addition, she has no family history of cardiovascular disease or diabetes mellitus; however, her mother and father have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease due to being heavy smokers for over 30 years. Amy has a stressful job and is concerned by her weight gain of 10 pounds over the past 3 years. Her exercise goal is to lose weight by walking and jogging on a treadmill at moderate intensity in her work fitness facility 3 to 4 days per week during the work week and walking at home with her husband and dog on the weekends at moderate intensity.
